Kids Dentist: Happy Visits for Children

A child’s first visit to their family dentist can feel scary at first. Children may associate a dentist with a doctor whom they have had an unpleasant experience with. They may think back to the time they had their blood drawn or when they were getting vaccinated.

At our Carmel/Noblesville dental clinic, we believe that a dentist should be looked at as a friend of the family, ready to set your child up for healthy oral habits.

Preparing for your child’s visit

According to the American Dental Association, a child should visit the dentist by the age of one. Most parents, however wait until a child is two or three.

Whatever age your child is on his or her first visit, you should consider doing the following before:

  • Ask the dentist what will happen during the visit.
  • Be able to explain the steps of the visit to your child. It will make them¬†more comfortable with the experience.
  • Plan with the dentist what will happen if your child acts difficult.
  • Read books about visiting the dentist to your child. There are a wide variety of children’s books on the topic.
  • Obtain a copy of your child’s complete medical records and bring it with you to the appointment.

Always a happy visit at Deldar Dental

Your child’s first visit to your family dentist will be brief, often no more than 15-30 minutes. This will give Dr. Deldar a chance to bond with your child and ease any concerns your child may have. This visit is about building trust. Do not worry if during the first visit your child is uncooperative. This is common and Dr. Deldar will happy to reschedule.

Eventually, your child will become just as comfortable with the dentist as you are.

If all goes well during the visit, Dr. Deldar can proceed with the check-up.

Examine your child’s teeth and gums

Discuss with you and your child best practices for healthy teeth. Depending on the need, Dr. Deldar may complete a gentle cleaning and take X rays of your child’s teeth. Dr. Deldar will also answer any questions you or your child have about dental visits and treatments.

Plan on scheduling your child’s next appointment.

It’s best to have your child’s teeth looked at twice a year.
