What can I expect from TMJ treatment?
Once a proper diagnosis has been made, treatment for TMJ disorder can begin. At Deldar Dental, we generally follow a two-phase treatment approach.
What is TMJ treatment phase 1?
What is TMJ treatment phase 2?
In phase 2, we schedule ongoing appointments to monitor, measure, and adjust the orthotic to further improve jaw activity, position, and function. Depending on your individual needs, we may also recommend directed orthodontics (braces) to shift your teeth to the ideal position as quickly as possible. In some cases, reconstruction of the teeth/bite may be necessary to realign and rebalance the bite, which can significantly reduce TMJ pain.
NOTE: Everyone’s treatment profile will vary.
It’s important to note that each person’s treatment profile will vary, and it may take several months or even years to see significant improvement in your TMJ symptoms. However, with proper treatment, many patients are able to achieve long-term relief from TMJ pain and other symptoms.

TMJ Treatment FAQ's
Will TMJ treatment stop my TMJ symptoms?
As with all medical treatments, results will vary. But in most cases, realigning the bite has a significant positive effect on TMJ pain and symptoms.
Before TMJ treatment, what can I do to alleviate TMJ pain?
- Eat soft foods and avoid biting excessively
- Chew with both sides of your mouth
- Avoid opening your mouth wider than it feels comfortable
- Apply moist heat up to four times a day for five to 10 minutes
- Apply cold compresses at the same rate/frequency as heat
- Massage the sore jaw joint(s) gently, using a rotating motion, for five to 10 seconds, then open the mouth and hold for another five to 10 seconds to stretch the chewing muscles that surround the joint, and repeat throughout the day
