Silver amalgam fillings are a mix of silver, tin, zinc, copper, and mercury. That last ingredient should alarm you because silver amalgam fillings contain 50% mercury. Traditional silver amalgam fillings do not easily bond to teeth. To ensure that the fillings fit snugly and adhere to teeth, dentists prepare a pocket by drilling extra and removing some healthy tooth structure.
