4 ways to treat patients in a more holistic, healthful manner

There’s no denying that more people in the Greater Indianapolis Area are looking to their health care providers for a more holistic, whole body approach. Taking a holistic approach to dentistry often means going against the grain of conventional practices.

As your Indianapolis, Carmel, and Noblesville dentist – I don’t have a problem with that. Our number one focus is on the health and safety of our patients.

There are 4 ways in which I currently treat our patients in a more holistic, healthful manner.

1. Deldar Dental is an Amalgam-Free Environment

One of the first things to leave our office were amalgam fillings. These are commonly known as silver or metal fillings. With the recent research that’s come to light, I’m not sure why anyone would want to work with this material. Amalgam fillings can be hazardous to our patients and to those of us who work here.

The mercury in amalgam fillings has been reported to slowly leak out of the filling material every time a person chews, clenches their jaw, or grinds their teeth. These mercury vapors can then get into their bloodstream and can cause damage to other organs.

In addition, those who work with amalgam fillings are constantly exposed to these vapors. The entire office can become contaminated. I use composite fillings instead of the mercury-laden amalgam fillings.

2. We Offer BPA-Free Filling Materials Only

What about BPA? BPA, or bisphenol A, is a compound that mimics estrogen. This is one of the ingredients used in plastic containers and bottles.

Its negative effects are well-researched and the compound is known to contribute to psychological problems such as moodiness or aggressiveness. There are also concerns that it may be linked to certain types of cancers.

Our concern was that, even though I removed amalgam fillings from our office, we would be exposing patients to BPA because many composite filling materials contain this compound.

Thankfully, more companies are coming on-board with the holistic approach to dentistry. The result: BPA-free filling materials.

3. Providing Laser Acupuncture to reduce the gag reflex

Another holistic service I am now providing is laser acupuncture. This is like traditional acupuncture, except instead of using needles we use a laser.

This is a great option for patients who have a difficult time with their gag reflex. We’ve received great feedback from this service. It really helps the patient at ease and makes them more comfortable.

4. Cosmetic Dentistry: What God gave you is best. Keep it!

I’ll say it again: What God gave you is best. Keep it!

My ultimate goal when serving my cosmetic and restorative dental patients is to be conservative. I would never recommend treatment because a patient “might” need it.

First, I make sure a procedure is needed. Then, I go ahead and determine how he can take care of the patient’s needs in the most conservative and minimally invasive way possible.
